Update from the Santa Fe to Taos Thru-Hike
The guidebook and a possible name change
It’s taken me far too long to get this newsletter out. For those of you who signed up months ago via the website or via the Facebook Group, my apologies. There is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
A lot’s been going on. The big thing to tell you about is the guidebook. The Kindle version is available for pre-order on Amazon. It’s set to release May 12th. It’s looking like it will be about 170 pages, 4.5 × 7 inches.
Very early mockup of the guidebook. The map is just a placeholder, but I could use my Gaia maps in the guidebook so long as I include attribution.
Would you like to be a beta reader for the guidebook?
A beta reader (sometimes called an “advance reader”) is someone who reads a good but not-quite-final version of the book and gives their feedback. They tell the author what they liked or didn’t like about the book and what they think could be added or cut. They don’t edit or proofread the book.
If you’re interested in being a beta reader, please fill out this short Google form.
If you’re interested in being on the launch list for the guidebook, or in being an advertiser, or in possibly contributing to the guidebook, please also fill out that form.
What name do you like better: “The Santa Fe to Taos Thru-Hike” or “The Plaza to Plaza Thru-Hike”?
I like how specific the current name is (“The Santa Fe to Taos Thru-Hike”), but it has issues.
For years, I’ve noticed how people will often refer to the thru-hike as “this plaza to plaza hike”. I was in a meeting recently where basically everybody used “the Plaza to Plaza route” instead of “Santa Fe to Taos”.
I’ve been thinking about changing the name of the thru-hike since late 2023, seriously enough that I bought the domain name plazatoplaza.com back in 2023.
Here’s what I like about calling it The Plaza to Plaza Thru-Hike:
It’s direction agnostic
It sells one of the key benefits of the thru-hike, which is that you can walk from Plaza to Plaza
It’s easier to say
People seem to default to using “plaza to plaza” instead of “Santa Fe to Taos”
What do you think? Should I change the name of the thru-hike? Vote here.
Cheers,
